Zanzibar itinerary: Where to go and what to do

Everything you need to know before visiting one of the most beautiful islands in East Africa

Pole pole — you'll hear it everywhere in Zanzibar. It means "slowly, slowly," a gentle reminder to take your time and actually enjoy where you are. Consider this the fuller version of what we touched on in our summer destinations roundup: where to go, what to do, and why each stop earns its place.

Stone Town

Start here. Stone Town is the UNESCO-listed old town — narrow streets, spice markets, and centuries of Swahili, Arab, and Indian history blended into one. Go pole pole here: it's less about ticking off sights and more about getting a little lost, and it's also where you'll catch one of the most wonderful sunrises over the Indian Ocean.

Swim with turtles

Head to the turtle sanctuary in Nungwi — one of those experiences that feels like it shouldn't be real.

Paje

The more local, laid-back side of the island. Paje is known for kitesurfing, but even if that's not your thing, it's a quieter, more grounded alternative to the north.

Matemwe

One of my favourite places on the island. This is where you can see some of the most beautiful sunrises in Zanzibar. Matemwe is quiet, calm, and genuinely worth the early wake-up.

Kendwa & Nungwi

If Paje and Matemwe are about slowing down, Kendwa and Nungwi are the opposite — Beautiful sunset, beach clubs and the island's liveliest nightlife. Head here if you want a bit more energy in the evenings.

Jambiani

Even more local than Paje. Fewer crowds, more authentic beach bars and restaurants — this is where you'll feel like you're actually in Zanzibar, not just visiting it.

Horseback riding on the beach

One of those spontaneous, once-in-a-while experiences worth booking, even if it's not usually your thing.

Dolphin excursion

An early start, but seeing dolphins in the wild at sunrise makes it worth it. You can find them on the east or south coast — a little further out, but part of what makes the trip feel complete.

Whether you travel for history, food, or natural wonders, Zanzibar has a way of pulling you back in. Pole pole — take your time with it.
